Us curly girls either want to:
- Cut our hair super short (you only live once, right?)
- Grow our hair fast!
So, in case you want to grow your hair faster, I’ve got 10 amazing tips for you! No matter your hair length, porosity, hair type… If you follow these 10 tips, your hair WILL grow! Ready?
1 – Be mindful of the products you use
You don’t want to use products with silicones, sulfates, drying alcohol, and harmful chemicals in general. That’s why I personally follow the Curly Girl Method and I have decided to start Happy Curls Co!
2 – Deep. Condition.
Yes, yes, yes! This is KEY! Deep conditioning your hair once a week or every two weeks is so important – it prevents split ends, reduces breakage, and improves your hair’s health. My fav DC is this one from Jessicurl.
3 – Scalp
Growing your hair starts with your scalp. In order to keep your scalp healthy, I would recommend clarifying once a week or every two weeks (clarifying means cleansing your scalp from product build-up, pollution, etc), massage your scalp with oils & using a shampoo brush. My current fav clarifying treatment is the Flora & Curl Clay Wash.
4 – Castor Oil
This is for me, the BEST ways to promote hair growth. I have been using castor oil since forever, and let me tell you… It’s amazing. When applied to the scalp, it enhances the health of the hair follicles and, in turn, promotes hair growth.
5 – No heat
Yes, you heard me. Heat is a big no for curls. If you want to diffuse your hair, I’d recommend using low to medium heat only. You don’t want to damage your hair…
6 – Protein vs Moisture
You need to create the perfect protein vs moisture in your hair – not easy as there are so many products, right? This amazing article from Flora & Curl will help you find the perfect balance!
7 – Diet & Nutrition
What does that have to do with growing your hair?! Well, everything. You see, to promote hair growth, you need to ‘feed’ the hair from the inside. Meaning, the foods you eat have an impact on the growth, strength, and volume of your hair. So, eat healthily and drink plenty of water!
8 – Ditch the towel
You know in the movies when you see the woman living the bathroom with a big white towel wrapped around her hair? Yeah, don’t do that. Classic towels will strip your hair of aaaall the moisture they need to grow. Use a microfiber towel or a cotton t-shirt instead.
9 – Trim your hair when needed
Most curl experts (including the Curly Girl Handbook) say curly hair should be cut every 6-8 weeks. This is said to oxygenize the hair which helps it curl and grow. However, I’d recommend trimming your hair only when necessary – meaning when you notice your hair-splitting!
10 – Finish your shower with a cool rinse
Rinsing your hair with cold water will help seal the cuticle and strengthen your hair before styling it. It’s worth it!
